Independence is our main value
"August 25, 1991 is a defining date for the modern Belarusian state. On this day, the Supreme Soviet gave the force of constitutional law to the Declaration of State Sovereignty, adopted a year earlier. The Belarusian people declared to the world: Belarus is independent," — noted the deputy head of the United Transitional Cabinet, head of the NAM, Pavel Latushka.
"Centuries of struggle by our ancestors for independence finally ended in victory, and sovereign Belarus took its place on the map of Europe. Belarusians finally gained their own home. A home in which no one else would have the right to oppress us, determine our path, impose foreign allies on us, or forbid us to speak our native language.
Today our common home is occupied by the enemy of Belarus. The dictator has turned independence — sacred to every one of us — into a banal object of trade, simply to hold on to personal power. Our country is once again being handed over to foreign control, and Belarusians are being deprived of the right to their own future.
Our main common task is to prevent this crime against the nation. We have no right to hand over to hostile forces what generations of Belarusians fought for. Defending independence is our duty to our ancestors and to future generations, to whom we must pass on a free and sovereign Belarus.
Independence is the main, inviolable value of the Belarusian people. More than 97% of Belarusians firmly aspire to live in a sovereign state. And this is our common foundation. A foundation that will help Belarusians reach understanding with Belarusians, join forces, and return the country to its rightful master — the Belarusian people.
