Pavel Latushka on Lukashenko’s role in negotiations on the situation in Ukraine
"Lukashenko is Putin’s puppet. He cannot negotiate with the United States without Putin’s consent, nor act as a mediator. He can make promises, but in reality, his master is in Moscow", said Pavel Latushka, Deputy Head of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus and Head of the National Anti-Crisis Administration, in an interview with Le Monde.
The issue of the Belarusian situation continues to be in the spotlight of international, foreign, and Belarusian independent media. In the interview with the French newspaper Le Monde, Pavel Latushka noted that the regime has not changed its repressive policies and expressed concerns that Putin and Lukashenko might use Belarus for new aggressive actions against Ukraine.
Putin and Lukashenko hope to return the war negotiations on Ukraine to Minsk, as was the case in 2014 and 2015 with the signing of the so-called "Minsk I" and "Minsk II" agreements.
"Some are already talking about 'Minsk III'", said Pavel Latushka. "In Lukashenko’s eyes, this would strengthen his role and relevance regarding Western countries. As for Putin, against whom there is an international arrest warrant from the ICC [for the war crime of illegal deportation of Ukrainian children], he would feel at home in Belarus, where he can move freely without risk of arrest. But I believe this is unacceptable for Ukrainians. They [Putin and Lukashenko] want to humiliate Zelensky".
