We present the first episode of the NAM project "Conversations about Transition: How to Get Out of Autocracy", which is based on the NAM report "National Dialogue for Belarus. A comparative analysis of national dialogues in Germany, Poland and Spain as possible models for resolving the political crisis in Belarus".
In these films, we explore the experience of Germany, Poland and Spain in the transition from authoritarianism to democracy.
Our goal is not to find a model that can be copied. That is impossible. Rather, it is to use an analysis of historical experience to identify the possible contours of a Belarusian model of transition: a model that would make it possible to end the internal confrontation, protect the country's independence, preserve functioning state institutions and return to citizens the right to determine the future of the Republic of Belarus for themselves.
For us Belarusians, this is not just history: it is a set of lessons for a future transition to democracy.
